History of Northumberland Heath
Part One
Historic Heath

The Old Post Mill
Upon north heath there once stood an old wooden millers mill
Beneath its oaken gear creaking wheels and wind driven sails
Waiting for the wind to awaken and to blow if all had gone still
Wives leaning gossiping with tale looking on nearby wood rails
Horse driven carts with labouring men lifting full sacks of grain
Farmers with fruit orchards and meadows so freshly ploughed
Grassy fields and tall growing corn all tilled with backs of pain
Children playing between trees all shouting and voices so loud

No longer now does it turn or stand there upon even proud
Nothing remains but old rough brick curved wall to be seen
Today people walk past neither looking upon or even crowd
Of what was stood tall once upon north heath village green
The buildings history lost now in the forgotten passing days

To visit the site of the old post mill, walk down Mill Road, turn right at St Pauls Road, enter the alley on the right, at the rear of the shop on the corner. There you will see the remains of the old brick base and wall. The roof which was still upon it for many years was sadly destroyed by a fire in the 1970's.
Below are some photographs of a similar Post Mill at Pitstone. Now rebuilt and restored by The National Trus and Friendst. A 5ft model of it has been constructed and is to be seen on display if you visit the area
. Out of curiuosity I discovered there are plans of it available for £40 to enable details and construction by a modelmaker but I have yet been able to obtain.
